2009 Platinum Eagle Coin And” Sold Out At The Mint

Posted by on December 5, 2011

The US Mint released 2009 American Eagle One Ounce Platinum Proof Coin in December and has sold out of the coins, as had been predicted by many numismatic resources. And it took about a week.

Platinum eagle coins were struck at the Mint’s facility at West Point and release was limited to a mintage of only 8,000. The obverse on this year’s Platinum features the first of six annual designs dedicated to the six principles of the Preamble of the United States Constitution.

The 2009 reverse theme depicts “To Form a More Perfect Union” by using four faces to represent the diversity of the Nation with interweaving hair and clothing. It was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

The obverse side remains unchanged, featuring Lady Liberty along with the inscriptions “LIBIERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the year.

New element added this year is an American Eagle “privy mark,” based on an original “coin punch” identified at the United States Mint at Philadelphia.

Platinum eagles are still available at eBay, check auctions below.
